Tumblr makes creative expression simple for everybody. Couple that product with a community ethos that values the output more than the creator and Tumblr has achieved something unique and historically significant. But for every Tumblr there is a MySpace and for every Instagram there is a flickr. Perhaps the greatest threat to Tumblr’s business is from the creativity that they have nurtured and manifested.

After trying to avoid it for several days, I finally watched this little tour that Katherine and I gave of Tumblr HQ.  While it’s always alarming to see my constant and overly emphatic hand motions (see above) permanently recorded, I think we did a decent job of showing off the place.

Staircar: Redis-powered notifications

Staircar’s performance was beyond our expectations and very consistent, with average response times per request at or under 5ms, even during peak traffic. Extensive benchmarking showed Staircar was able to handle roughly 30,000 requests a second per server.

Blake made your notifications an order of magnitude faster and more reliable, and I bet you didn’t even notice (which is exactly the way we like it).
