Photo of New Mosque in Istanbul. New Mosque actually isn’t very new (construction began in 1597). Like all mosques, the 5-times-a-day prayer call (ezan in Turkish) is broadcast from the minarets. Really adds to feeling of “oh hey, I’m not in NYC anymore”.
After a couple of days in Istanbul, you get used to the day being divided up by the call to prayer, which, thanks to the hills and the maniacal hand that drew streets on them, combines (and competes) from mosques around the city. Istanbul is definitely at the top of my list of cities that need another, longer visit.
